What Applicant Tracking Systems actually do to your resume
Parsing, keyword scoring and the formatting choices that quietly drop you out of the pile before a human ever opens the file.

An ATS is not a villainous AI deciding your career. It is mostly software that stores applications, parses text into fields, and helps recruiters search and filter. The damage happens when your file never becomes readable text.
Tables, text boxes, headers that hold your email, and multi-column layouts are common ways to lose contact details or scramble experience. A plain, single-column structure with standard section headings still wins more often than a designed PDF that looks impressive in Preview.
Keywords matter, but stuffing is obvious. Mirror the language of the role you want when it is true. Use terms like "React," "CI/CD," and "stakeholder management" inside bullets that show scope and outcome.
After you edit, paste the resume into a plain-text editor. If the order is nonsense or half your bullets vanished, the parser will struggle too. Fix structure before you polish adjectives.
